You or someone you care about might be going through difficult times but you struggle to find a qualified professional who can provide therapy in English in Madrid
Who Am I?
My name is Alejandro Muriel Hermosilla. I am a Clinical Psychologist and psychotherapist based in Madrid, where I have my private practice.
I also work as a Clinical Psychologist at Gregorio Marañón Hospital and as an Associate Professor at URJC University.
I completed my residency in Clinical Psychology at Gregorio Marañón Hospital, one of Spain’s leading hospitals for Psychiatry and Clinical Psychology, where I have been working for over a decade.
My international academic and clinical experience includes Trinity College Dublin and the Department of Psychiatry at Yale University.
I work with people from different countries and cultural backgrounds, providing therapy in English for international residents and English-speaking patients in Madrid.
Why can you trust me?
I am a Clinical Psychologist with over 15 years of clinical experience, currently working at Gregorio Marañón Hospital alongside my private practice.
My clinical experience includes working with both adults and children, treating a wide range of psychological difficulties, and collaborating with psychiatrists, psychologists and other healthcare professionals as part of multidisciplinary teams.
I am also an Associate Professor at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, combining clinical practice with teaching, tutoring and academic activity.
My international academic and clinical experience includes Trinity College Dublin and working as an intern at the Department of Psychiatry at Yale University, where I participated in clinical and academic activities, including seminars and lectures.
I believe that good psychological care requires both solid clinical experience and an individual understanding of each person. My aim is to provide thoughtful, professional care while adapting my approach to the particular circumstances and needs of each patient.
Below you can see what my patients say about my work…
«After having seen two other psychologists because of my anxiety attacks, I can say that I am finally feeling better. I also understand now what had really happened to me.
Thank you for being so attentive and genuinely compassionate.»
Why do I provide therapy in English?
Having lived, studied and worked in different countries, I understand some of the particular challenges that can come with living abroad.
I studied Clinical Psychology at Trinity College Dublin and, during my residency in Clinical Psychology, I worked at the Department of Psychiatry at Yale University. These experiences allowed me to learn and work in highly international environments.
Throughout my career, I have worked with people from different cultural backgrounds and have developed a particular interest in working with international patients and expatriates who prefer to express themselves in English.
I currently work with patients from different countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom and South Africa, as well as many other international backgrounds.
What can you expect from therapy?
Whether you are looking for couples therapy or trauma therapy, whenever you begin therapy in Madrid, you can expect a safe and confidential space where your inner world can be explored with care and depth.
From the first sessions, I aim to understand both your current difficulties and the emotional patterns that may lie behind them. Therapy can help you make sense of your feelings, relationships, and the way you relate to yourself.
Since I offer therapy in English in Madrid, you can explore your experiences in the language that feels most natural to you.
Therapy can help you manage your daily challenges while also gaining a deeper understanding of what may be contributing to them. Together, we can develop practical ways to cope with daily challenges and create meaningful, lasting change.
Benefits of therapy
Therapy can help you understand yourself more deeply and become aware of patterns that influence how you feel and relate to others.
Exploring the links between past experiences and present difficulties can lead to greater self-acceptance, emotional freedom, and more fulfilling relationships.
Therapy is not only about reducing symptoms—it’s about growing into a fuller, more connected version of yourself.
For many people living abroad, being able to express emotions and experiences in English can make an important difference. Having a space where you can speak freely in the language that feels most natural can help create a genuine therapeutic connection.
Would you like to book an appointment?
Whether we meet in person at my practice in Madrid’s Retiro district or work together online, therapy in English can offer a consistent space to explore what is happening in your life, wherever you are.
What matters most is continuity: having a familiar space where you can speak openly and return to the work we build together, even when life involves moving or travelling.
If you are ready to begin, the initial sessions will give us an opportunity to understand what brings you to therapy and consider together how we might approach the work.
My aim is to offer a thoughtful and confidential space where you can explore your experiences at your own pace, with attention not only to what is happening now but also to the patterns and conflicts that may lie beneath it.
Why offering therapy for expats?
Having lived, studied and worked in countries such as England, Germany, the United States and Brazil, I have experienced some of the particular challenges that can come with living abroad. Being able to fully express yourself in your own language can be especially important when discussing personal or psychological difficulties.
In psychotherapy, feeling understood without language or cultural barriers can make a meaningful difference. It allows you to explore your experiences openly and with the depth that therapy requires.
Would you like to begin therapy?
If you are ready to begin, you can book your first evaluation session. I will take time to understand what brings you to therapy and how we can work together.
